Sharon is a classically trained actress and a Broadway Baby in every sense of the term. Both of her parents are former Broadway performers (Johnny and June Brown ) and her grandmother (Mimi Williams) was a Broadway dancer and her cousin was Broadway legend Paula Kelly. Sharon started her professional career with print work at three years old and made her Broadway debut at five years old in Maggie Flynn starring Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy. She was featured in a slew of commercials and at 14 was the youngest actress to play the role of Dorothy in the national tour of The Wiz. She was cast as The Narrator both on Broadway and in the 1st National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice’s Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat making history as the first black actress to do the role.
Years later she would make history again as the first black actress to be cast as Lucy in Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll & Hyde The Musical. In between, Sharon played Kim, a role specifically written for the movie version of A Chorus Line. Michael Bennett cast her in the coveted role of Effie in Dreamgirls.
She played Molly Ringwald’s best friend Lila in the movie For Keeps and was featured in Sister Act ll starring Whoopi Goldberg. Sharon was featured in Rent as the Seasons Of Love soloist, played both Queen Gynecia and Pythio in Head Over Heels, Caroline in Caroline Or Change, Mrs Nolan in Adam Guettel’s Days Of Wine And Roses and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge starring Halle Berry.
She is most recognized from television as Audra McDonald’s alter ego in The Good Fight and Angela the opera diva on A Different World.
Sharon played The Blues Singer in A Night With Janis Joplin, Papa Ge in Once On This Island and Nurse in Diane Paulus’ Romeo And Juliet at The American Repertory Theatre.
As much as she absolutely loves being an actress, Sharon's entire heart is her son Elijah.
